Author Description

Dr. Matthew Berg is the CEO and Principal Scientist of Simfero Consultants, a water resources science and policy firm based in Houston, Texas. He has over 20 years of water experience across public and private sectors. His work on flooding issues has been referenced in regional and national media, and his research was cited in the first ever State Flood Assessment for the Texas Legislature. After Hurricane Harvey, Matthew briefed the US congressional delegation from Texas about climate impacts to water resources. Dr. Berg authored the first watershed plan from Texas approved by the US EPA and helped develop a workshop series to train citizen stakeholders in watershed planning efforts, which is now used in projects across the state. He is currently involved in projects documenting damage to infrastructure from flood disasters for FEMA recovery programs, landscape-scale restoration to reduce flooding and sediment transport, and source water protection efforts, among many others. Selected through a US Department of Agriculture program to develop the next generation of science leaders, Matthew completed his doctoral studies in hydrology at Texas A&M University, where he received the top honors for research and teaching bestowed by the school. He has received awards for science, stakeholder engagement, and policy work from the Ecological Society of America, the Soil Science Society of America, and others. Dr. Berg is a member of the Bayou Land Conservancy board of directors and was selected to Houston Public Media’s Young Leaders Council.
