New AZ Rules for Advanced Water Purification

Arizona has made a significant stride in addressing its water challenges with the approval of new Advanced Water Purification (AWP) rules.

The approval by the Governor's Regulatory Review Council (GRRC) enables Arizona cities and water providers to implement Advanced Water Purification projects. By facilitating water reuse, Arizona is taking a proactive approach to ensure a reliable and resilient water supply in the face of drought.

The new AWP rules establish stringent potable water standards, ensuring public health and safety. Key regulatory components include:

  • Initial Source Water Characterization
  • Pathogen Control
  • Site-Specific Chemical Control
  • Enhanced Source Control
  • Rigorous Minimum Design Criteria

The AWP rules are the result of extensive stakeholder collaboration and public engagement. Input from technical advisory groups, municipalities, and water providers over many years has been instrumental in shaping the regulatory framework.

Cities like Phoenix and Scottsdale are already prepared to integrate AWP into their long-term water strategies.
