New Law Mandates Utah Data Center Water Reporting

The Utah legislature has officially passed a bill requiring water reporting for new data facilities moving into the state. Driven by concerns over resource consumption, the new legislation aims to increase transparency by mandating that operators publicly disclose their annual water usage to state officials.

The bill specifically targets new data centers measuring at least 10,000 square feet and consuming 75 acre-feet or more of water annually. To ensure these companies act as good partners in the nation's second-driest state, the law requires them to communicate anticipated consumption with local providers before construction even begins.

Following discussions with industry operators, a compromise was reached ensuring the mandate only applies to new facilities established on or after July 1, 2026. By enforcing this reporting standard, state officials hope to better manage drought conditions and protect local resources without discouraging vital economic development.
