The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) is beginning an environmental impact statement (EIS) for the Verde River Sediment Mitigation Project in northern Arizona. This comprehensive study will examine options for restoring lost storage capacity due to sedimentation.
The goals of this EIS include restoring the lost capacity of Horseshoe Reservoir and mitigating future sedimentation throughout the system. Ultimately, these efforts strengthen regional water supply resilience and reliability.
Preliminary alternatives for analysis include
- Two new Bartlett Dam alternatives identified for feasibility-level analysis.
- At least one non-structural alternative.
- A no-action alternative.
- Other alternatives were developed through the environmental review process.
Reclamation will work closely with Salt River Project who is the primary non-federal cost-share partner. Federal agencies, such as the US Army Corps of Engineers and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, will also share input on this process to ensures a thorough environmental assessment of the project.
Reclamation is actively seeking public comments. Public scoping meetings have been held, both virtually and in person, to share the EIS plan and gather feedback. Written comments are still being accepted via mail, email, or the project website.
